When Should You Put Up Christmas Lights in Washington?

The traditional answer is the weekend after Thanksgiving. The practical answer in Northwest Washington is earlier, and the reason is weather, not decorating etiquette.

The weather decides it

October and early November give you the last dry, mild, workable days of the year. By late November this region is dark by 4:30 with rain most weeks. Installing in that window is slower, wetter and less safe, whoever is doing it.

Install early, light later

This is what most of our customers do and it solves the etiquette problem completely: have the lights installed in late October or early November, and leave them off until the day you want them on. Nobody knows they are there. Most homeowners flip them on Thanksgiving weekend.

  • Late October to mid November: best install conditions, best date availability.
  • Thanksgiving weekend: the traditional switch-on.
  • December: possible, but you are taking whatever slot is left.

Book now, choose your install week, light them when you want.
