Where to See Christmas Lights in Skagit County: Mount Vernon, La Conner and Anacortes

Skagit County has the best single ingredient for holiday lights in the region: flat open ground. A lit roofline in the valley is visible from a long way off in a way it never is on a wooded hillside.

Events worth planning around

Experience Mount Vernon Festival of Lights

Mount Vernon

A neighborhood decorating competition run through December. Because it is a competition, the participating streets go far past ordinary, and the entry list is the best local map of where to drive.

La Conner lighted boat parade

Swinomish Channel, La Conner

Boats running the channel in full lights. Distinct from anything else in the county, and the waterfront is the place to stand.

La Conner tree lighting

Gilkey Square, La Conner

A small-town tree lighting in a walkable downtown, usually paired with the shops staying open late.

Illuminight Winter Walk

Mount Vernon

A walking light experience rather than a drive. Good for anyone with kids who will not sit in a car.

The residential drive

Downtown Mount Vernon and the older streets east of it have the most consistent displays, and Anacortes rewards a drive through Old Town and out toward the water, where wind exposure means the houses that stay lit all season were clearly installed properly.

Burlington and Sedro-Woolley are quieter but have individual houses worth the detour, particularly the craftsman homes along the older streets.

Why Skagit homes photograph well

Open sight lines and low horizon. A two-story farmhouse with a fully traced roofline in the Skagit flats reads like a drawing at a quarter mile, which is not true of the same house tucked into trees. If your property has that kind of exposure, roofline lighting is the highest-return thing you can do with it.

We measure Skagit rooflines from aerial imagery. No visit needed.
