What Does Christmas Light Installation Cost in Northwest Washington?

Almost nobody publishes real numbers for this service, which makes it hard to tell a fair quote from a bad one. Here is how holiday lighting is priced in Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish and Island counties, what should be included, and how to compare two quotes that look nothing alike.

What you are actually paying for

A professional install is not a bag of lights and a ladder. A full-service quote covers the lights themselves, custom cutting to your roofline, installation, in-season service, takedown, and off-season storage. That is five separate jobs bundled into one seasonal price.

This matters when you compare quotes. A cheap number that covers only hanging is not the same product as a number that includes coming back out in December when a bulb fails.

The four things that move your price

1. 1Linear feet of roofline. The single biggest factor. A rambler front only might be 60 to 90 feet; a full wrap on a two-story colonial can pass 300. Every quote should start from a measurement, not a guess.
2. 2Height, pitch and access. Second-story peaks, steep pitches, and rooflines you can only reach over a deck or landscaping take longer and require more equipment. Two houses with identical footage can differ by a wide margin here.
3. 3Bulb count and design. C9 bulbs on tight spacing read bolder from the street and use more material than wide spacing. Adding trees, columns, pathways or wreaths adds material and labor.
4. 4Whether lights are leased or owned. Leased programs bundle material into the seasonal price and include replacement. Buy-your-own programs charge less up front and leave the maintenance and storage with you.

Typical ranges, and how to read them

Nationally published guides put full-service roofline installation in the range of roughly two to six dollars per linear foot, with two-story and complex rooflines at the top of that band. Treat that as a sanity check, not a quote: it is a national average that does not account for Northwest pitch, access, or the fact that some quotes include service and others do not.

What changes by town

Housing stock is the reason a Bellingham quote and an Everett quote for the same square footage can differ.

• Bellingham and Fairhaven: older homes with steeper pitches, dormers and detail work that adds time.
• Mount Vernon, Burlington and Sedro-Woolley: a lot of single-story and split-level homes with straightforward rooflines, often the most efficient installs in the region.
• Everett, Marysville and Lake Stevens: newer two-story construction with long rooflines, which raises footage but keeps access simple.
• Oak Harbor, Coupeville and Whidbey Island: wind exposure means clip density and cord routing matter more than footage alone.

Why leasing wins in this climate

Northwest Washington gets rain and wind from November through January. Store-bought light strings are not built for a full season of it, and the failure usually shows up in the middle of December. Buying also means storing. A season of C9 strings takes real space and comes out of the box tangled and short a few bulbs. Leased lights go back with us in January.

What should be in writing

• Measured footage and exactly which rooflines are included
• Bulb type, color temperature and spacing
• Install window and takedown window
• What happens when a bulb or section fails, and how fast
• Whether storage is included
• Proof of license and insurance

If a quote is missing any of those, ask before you sign. The gap is usually where the cheaper price came from.
